The Lamezia Terme Section of the State Archives, a unit dependant on the State Archives of Catanzaro, was originally created by Ministerial Decree of April 12, 1954 as a State Archives "Subsection," but then changed to a full State Archives Section by Ministerial Decree of March 31, 1965, effective May 1 of that year. In all, there are 40 State Archives Sections throughout the country, each located in its respective provincial or county seat. They store the particularly important documentary holdings of each locality.

The Lamezia Section of the State Archives holds the notarial instruments from the Nicastro district starting in 1555 and up to 1896; registers, folders, and the books of judicial magistrates of the communities of Nicastro, Sambiase, Cortale, Feroleto Antico, Filadelfia, Maida and Martirano, from 1810 to 1979; the electoral lists of the district of Lamezia Terme (1979-1990); archival material of the District Office of Direct Taxation beginning 1871 until 1961; and census maps. In addition, the Section holds a collection of laws and decrees of the Italian Republic from 1954 to 1963, and the Official Gazette of the Republic from 1964 to the present. It is also endowed with a pleasant reading room furnished with a technical library available for consultation. The mission of the State Archives, and therefore also the mission of the Lamezia Section, is to preserve the archives of public administration that operates in its locality. Such preservation works to safeguard the historical memory of the territory. Through the worthy efforts of those who organize and preserve the documentary material, such a mission magnifies the territory’s historical and cultural value, rendering it fruitful to an ever-increasing number of users.

Therefore it serves not merely to save but also to give value to its precious documentary material that is now understood as cultural wealth that is no longer limited to a restricted circle of a few specialists, but has become a point of historical reference of increasing usage, a point of departure for reconstructing local histories of customs and family life, and a legitimate support for cultural enrichment.
