THE BRIDGE AND MONASTERY OF S. ANTHONY
The
Monastery of S. Anthony was founded in 1545. Severely damaged by the earthquake
of 1638, it was later reconstructed and enlarged. The statue of S. Anthony
was made in 1685 in Naples by order of the father superior of the monastery
P. Antonio di Olivedi.
He also had the first small bridge built over the Canne River to give the Nicastrese access to the Monastery. It was subsequently called the Bridge of the Capuchins.
