PIAZZA FIORENTINO (SAMBIASE)

Sambiase has an ancient history, having arisen and grown around the Basilian monastery of S. Biagio. Piazza Fiorentino (Fiorentino Square), named after the great philosopher (Sambiase 1828 – Naples 1884), has represented and continues to represent the heart of the town in that all the roads that come out of the various neighborhoods of Sambiase’s historic center converge onto it.

The Piazza used to serve as a meeting place for day laborers whom the big farm owners hired there every morning. Agriculture (oil and wine) was indeed the driving force behind Sambiase’s economy.
