VIA
GARIBALDI (NICASTRO)
Today’s
Via Garibaldi, with the palace of the Brutto family (once the seat of the
local “parliament), was historically the principal artery of old Nicastro.
Until the last decade of the 1900s, Via Garibaldi was for the Nicastrese people the road of the “monachelle” (little nuns). It was, in fact, the usual place where abandoned children were left--the so-called “foundlings” or “projetti” (i.e. those thrown out).
Even the fountain was called “of the monachelle.”
