VIRTUAL RECONSTRUCTION
Ing. Antonello Villella
Observing the Castle of Nicastro from outside, that is from sites in the city that allow different views of the building or the towers, few can appreciate all its characteristics. Seeing the few remains, it’s certainly difficult to comprehend its topology. Only its towers and perimeter walls are distinguishable. After having studied the drawings and original layouts furnished by Massimiliano Cantafio, who is working with a team of experts carrying out a recovery of the castle, I thought of adding to this site a hypothetical reconstruction of the castle which, although based on original layouts, does not lay claim to absolute historical or architectural accuracy.

Ideal Reconstruction of the Swabian-Norman Castle of Nicastro

The photo on the left was first digitalized, cleaned of distracting elements, and equalized. After the saturation process, it was treated with photo-retouching software to give it the necessary texture for reconstruction. Each individual constitutive element (towers, battlements, windows) was created digitally. Afterwards, a number of layers were added, containing the individual components that had been obtained, to arrive at a total image. The final step was the creation of a landscape into which to insert the castle, a landscape characterized by stone, shrubs and other vegetation typical of the place.
