The first phase (Norman)
has been identified from the remains of the structure situated in
the upper part of the complex, particularly CF 14 and the lower part
of CF 1,
possibly relating to a preceding building. The structures might be
identifiable as a rectangular tower and a walled enclosure to protect
the summit of the cliff. The course
of the wall CF 14, not fully rectilinear, probably indicates that
the builders were adapting to the configuration of the rock. Furthermore,
it is not possible to establish if this
phase of the castle’s construction also encompassed other structures
in the lower portions. At this stage of the research it is, nevertheless,
prudent to hypothesize, on the
basis of what we see, that there was a single defensive tower that
at the same time oversaw the lower habitations. |
