The new village consisted of 20 houses within the walls, as well as many shanties where numerous peasants settled who farmed the lands of the Abbey. Into the church of the new village were brought the many holy relics that the Knights of Malta had kept in the Abbey, and which they were able to recover from the ruins of the earthquake. The end of the Abbey as a feudal institution occurred in 1806 with the law promulgated by Joseph Bonaparte that abolished feudalism. Over the years, the ruins were covered over by the debris of the stream Bagni, and the whole area became private property. The same thing happened to the imposing Bastion of Malta.
