THE COASTAL TOWERS AND BASTION OF THE KNIGHTS OF MALTA The Bastion of the Knights of Malta was an imposing defense tower in excellent state of preservation. It used to belong to the Order of St. Jerome of S. Eufemia, and it stood in the fief of the Knights of Malta. The viceroy of Naples, Don Pietro di Toledo, had it built in 1550 along with other coastal towers, and it was furnished with war machines. It served, as did the other towers, to defend the territory from frequent incursions by Turks and Saracens.
